Why Do Titans Eat Humans in Shingeki no Kyojin?
While the Anime World is a legendary and creative setting that a huge number of anime fans wish to live in, there are a few places that almost no one would like to live in, Attack on Titan is one such place. With Titans that aggressively hunt humans and eat them, it is obvious why.
At the beginning of the Attack on Titan series, it was supposed that Titans see humans as food and devour them for alimentary purposes, however, later on, as the plot progresses, it was showed that this was not the case.
In fact, Titans showed no interest in other creatures such as animals, which can be considered weird if they were actually looking for something to sustain them.
In addition, it was revealed that Titans obtained energy from sunlight and had absolutely no need to consume humans in order to survive.
Considering this, why do Titans eat humans in Attack On Titan? Well, Shingeki no Kyojin Season 3 provided us with the answer!
Why Do Titans Eat Humans in Shingeki no Kyojin?
In fact, Titans eat humans hoping that they are Titan Shifters, which can allow them to become humans again and escape the never-ending torment.
This thirst to turn back to their original form is instinctive and present in all non-shifter Titans.
In Attack on Titan Season 1, it was mentioned that Titans don’t eat humans for dietary purposes, which shocked the military students.
However, this crucial fact was hidden under all the action and butchery, and it was only in Shingeki no Kyojin Season 3, when Rod Reiss transformed into a Titan, that we finally figured out the real reason.
It was also during this scene that we saw things from the perspective of a Titan. After transforming, Rod Reiss saw people as glowing lights that he was unconsciously drawn to.
Afterwards, in season 3 too, it was revealed that Titans were all originally humans descended from Ymir, the first Titan known to exist. After being injected with spinal fluid, they turned into mindless Titans.
When Ymir ate Marcel Galliard, a Titan Shifter, she reverted from a mindless Titan to her original human form.
She later confessed that her time as a Titan was like a never-ending nightmare filled with infernal pain and that it was on pure instinct that she ate Marcel in order to gain possession of his powers.
With this, the question of why Titans eat humans has been answered; however, another question pops up.
According to what has been said until now, Titans need to consume a Titan Shifter to becom human again; however, only Eldians have the ability to transform into a Titan. If that’s the case, then why are the other humans eaten as well?
Just in season 3, during Grisha’s flashback, we witnessed a scene where Sergeant Major Gross, a Marleyan officer, was eaten by the Titans after being pushed off the ledge by Eren Kruger.
Since he did not possess the ability to transform into a Titan, there should have been no reason for titans to attack him.
Well, the answer is very simple. As it turns out, since most Titans are mindless creatures, they fail to recognize the humans that are Titan Shifters and target everyone until they find the person possessing those powers. Simple, isn’t it?
Why Do Titans Eat Humans: Dina Fritz is an exception!
In the first part of this blog post, we have mentioned the mindless Titans, and their instincts to become human again. However, is that true for the Abnormal Titans or those possessing Royal Blood?
While the majority of titans do act on their unconscious desires, there are a few exceptions: Grisha’s first wife, Dina Fritz, or better known as the Smiling Titan who ate Eren’s mum.
Before turning into a Titan, Dina promised Grisha that she would find her way back to him no matter what she became.
After turning into a Mindless Titan, Dina actually did make her way to Grisha’s house, all the while ignoring Bertholdt. Even during Attack on Titan Season 2, she eventually made her way to Eren, which doesn’t seem like a coincidence.
This behavior is entirely different from the other mindless Titans and makes one wonder whether something other than the instinct is guiding her.
Maybe it’s her promise to Grisha that allowed her to overcome her instinct and keep some consciousness, or maybe, it was her Royal Eldian Blood that made a difference.
