Why did Eren Betray Zeke (Attack on Titan Final Season)?
This blog post contains heavy spoilers from Shingeki no Kyojin manga series. Please proceed with caution!
From the Marley Arc, we get to know that Zeke Yeager betrayed Marley with the help of his half-brother Eren Yeager and the Survey Corps in order to take the first steps in his “secret plan” to free the Eldians.
During the meeting with Darius Zackary and other Eldian officers where Zeke told them his conditions, Eren misunderstood the intentions of his half-brother.
However, after Zeke revealed his “Euthanasia plan” for Eldia, Eren was quite “impressed” by his half-brother’s ideals.
Nevertheless, Eren knew that being the holder of the Founding Titan makes the control in his own hands, while Zeke is just an indispensable catalyst, and that’s why he kept agreeing to Zeke’s plan until the very end like a dutiful little brother.
As soon as Gabi beheaded Eren, Zeke stretched out his hand and caught it making the “contact” he wanted so much to happen all these years.
Finally, the brothers entered the coordinate and Zeke explained everything he knew about Ymir (Attack on Titan Season 5 Episode 3). Eren had also been waiting for this moment for a long time just to turn the tables on Zeke, and change Ymir’s will to serve the Royal Family, setting off “the Rumbling”.
Why did Eren betray Zeke? The Short Answer!
Why did Eren betray Zeke? Eren betrayed Zeke because their way of saving Eldia and their ideals about freedom were poles apart.
This betrayal was not something that occurred out of the blue. If we observe Eren’s and Zeke’s personalities carefully the answer will be obvious.
Eren being a combatant, could not accept the “Euthanasia plan” that Zeke suggested. According to our main protagonist, he was blessed enough to be born into this world, and that was a chance he did not want to take away from the Eldians.
So, why did Eren betray Zeke? It’s because he was born into this world!
Why did Eren betray Zeke: The difference in Ideologies
Eren was a combatant from the beginning of the story. Being the holder of the Attack Titan, further forced him to carry on his dream to attain freedom at any price.
Even though he starts as a somewhat shallow character, someone who was offended by the titans, but then he aimed to avenge his mother.
Besides, some circumstances pushed him to understand that the world is never as monochromatic as we think. It’s never a case of one side being totally innocent and guiltless while the foe being completely bad and guilty, that is just not how life works.
When Eren finally found a path in which he could save his homeland, it came with the price of murdering thousands of innocent people. Unfortunately, Eren sees that it was the only way to revive Eldia and its glory, and he was absolutely okay to undertake the role of the devil.
On the other hand, Zeke Yeager also wants to give Eldia freedom. But he wants to do so without bloodshed. Zeke wants the Eldians to accept their doom and be vanished.
Zeke’s Euthanasia plan was to fulfil Tom Xaver’s ideology to free the Eldians from the non-stop suffering by taking off their right to exist.
Unlike Eren, Zeke wasn’t a combatant which impacted heavily the choices he made, like betraying his parents in the process.
Instead of facing the Merleyans who looked down on him, Zeke was someone who wished he was never born. This is what made him lean towards the Euthanasia plan. Actually, this was the essential reason that sparked this plan into action.
That’s why, even though he knew that in the near future the use of titans will be overpowered by modern weapons and artillery, he still wants the power of the Founding Titan possessed by Eren.
Zeke believes his plan would bring peace to the world because he feels that Eldians, being able to turn out to titan, will always be condemned to suffer in this world.
So, if Eren was fully aware of Zeke’s meaningless and one-sided plan for Eldians, why did he decide to go along with it at the beginning?
Why did Eren betray Zeke & Why did he side with him at the beginning?
The answer is short and obvious: Eren sided with Zeke because he wanted to make use of the Founding Titan’s powers which is only possible if he was in contact with someone who had royal blood like his half-brother Zeke.
