In September 2021, the manga surpassed 4 million copies in circulation, making it the fastest Shounen Jump+ manga (as opposed to manga running in Shueisha’s print magazines) to reach the milestone.

The series was nominated for the 14th Manga Taisho Awards in January 2021, the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize last February, and the Eisner awards in May. It took first place in the seventh “Next Manga Awards” in the web manga category in August 2021.

Just as he was starting to hope for a better position, the unthinkable occurs. The miserable dude transforms into a kaiju and has to hide from his friends.

Can Kafka become a kaiju hunter despite being one himself? Or will he get killed at the hands of his colleagues? The upcoming Kaiju No 8 anime will give you a first-class ticket to witness the plight of this silly yet brave main protagonist.

Kaiju No. 8 is a modern shounen manga that excels thanks to its comedy timing, and Matsumoto’s crisp and clean artistry and composition.

Special attention should also be given to the world-building of Fumetsu no Anata e.

The gods and spirits, the traditions and communities, the places and people of this ongoing shounen manga are so well considered but not overly heavy: Fantasy world-building at its finest.

Top 7 Ongoing Shounen Manga to Read in 2022: One Punch Man

Top 7 Ongoing Shounen Manga to Read in 2022: One Punch Man

This is another intensely popular and lauded superhero-inspired ongoing shounen manga, but one with a bit more of an interesting story behind it.

One-Punch Man is the manga adaptation of the webcomic of the same name. It is illustrated by Yusuke Murata and follows the adventures of Saitama.

While being almost exactly the same series in terms of content there are slight variations and the artwork is entirely redone in a more professional style. The manga is published by Shueisha’s Young Jump Next and has many volumes to its name.

The creator of One Punch Man, is a writer known as ONE (who also created Mob Psycho 100).

The story follows the life of an average hero named Saitama who manages to win all of his fights with just one punch. This ends up being the cause of a lot of frustration as he no longer feels the thrill and adrenaline he once felt in battle. After all, what’s so good about having overwhelming power?

So, what we have here is a masterfully written manga, supported by colossal and gorgeous artwork. A dream for any shounen manga fan.

As for what it’s about, One Punch Man is a comedy and action ongoing shounen manga that tackles some pretty smart philosophical questions about things like:

  • One’s purpose in life
  • Personal motivations and drive
  • The fulfillment that comes from struggle
  • What gives us true satisfaction
  • The importance of having goals

Top 7 Ongoing Shounen Manga to Read in 2022: Jujutsu Kaisen

Top 7 Ongoing Shounen Manga to Read in 2022: Jujutsu Kaisen

Jujutsu Kaisen is an ongoing shounen manga series written and illustrated by Gege Akutami. It is serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump since March 2018.

The story focuses on Yuuji Itadori, a high-school student who, despite disliking athletics, is incredibly fit. Itadori gets involved in the world of sorcery when he swallows a powerful talisman (Sukuna’s finger) to protect his friends from its curse.

On observing that Yuuji wasn’t affected much even when inflicted with this curse, Satoru decides to send Yuuji on a quest to save the world.

This is an ongoing shounen manga that really commits to the darker side of shounen, imbuing the genre with monstrous and fearful energy.

Jujutsu Kaisen feels reminiscent of the classic shounen manga that came before it, especially Bleach and Naruto.

But, thanks to its willingness to lean on the dark, raw, and bloody side of both action and storytelling, the series is able to set itself apart and stand alone as something rather unique and fresh in the world of modern shounen manga.

Top 7 Ongoing Shounen Manga to Read in 2022: Chainsaw Man

Top 7 Ongoing Shounen Manga to Read in 2022: Chainsaw Man

Chainsaw Man is an ongoing shounen manga series written and illustrated by Fujimoto Tatsuki. Part 1 concluded on December 14, 2020, while announcing an anime adaptation by studio MAPPA and a Part 2 continuation on Jump+ web service.

Chainsaw Man Part 2 began serialization on July 13th, 2022.

When his father died, Denji was stuck with a huge debt and no way to pay it back. Thanks to a Devil dog he saved named Pochita, he is able to survive through odd jobs and killing Devils for the Yakuza.

Pochita’s chainsaw powers come in handy against these powerful demons. When the Yakuza betrays him and he’s killed by the Zombie Devil, Pochita sacrifices himself to save his former master. Now Denji has been reborn as some kind of weird Devil-Human hybrid. He is now a Chainsaw Man!

After his transformation, he’s quickly recruited by Makima to join the Public Safety Devil Hunters under threat of extermination now that he’s technically a Devil. Now that he’s living comfortably for the first time in his life, Denji struggles to determine his dreams and form meaningful relationships while killing Devils and working alongside other eccentric Devil Hunters.

Actually, Chainsaw Man has been the hot modern shounen manga of the last year or so.

It has an unlovable, childish protagonist, an absurd premise, and a thirst for blood and chaos.

It’s far more seinen than shonen in both its visuals and its themes. But that’s the trend that modern shonen manga has taken.

Here, at Anime Troops, we cover the release of every new chapter!
