9 Popular Types of Anime You Should Know!

Hello everyone! my name is Mannou-Sama and today I’m gonna be talking about the 9 most popular types of anime! Anyways there’s definitely more than 9 types of anime but these are the ones that I feel are most common or iconic, and every Otaku should know them!

Types of anime: Shounen

types of anime

the first anime genre, and one of the most popular types of anime is called “Shônen/Shounen”. You know those anime that seem “basically” all the same and have about 600 episodes and lots of fillers! Well, that’s Shounen! 😂

Of course, there are tons of girls who like Shounen too but the target audience is teen boys under the age of 18! Some popular Shounen anime would be Dragonball, Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, Boku no Hero Academia, Gintama, etc.

You get the picture, this is basically everything shown in Shônen anime: my family are gone because of you, I’ll never forgive you, oh yeah ultimate snail technique Jutsu…😒

Shounen anime can be really entertaining but sometimes they can go on for a little bit too long. I mean, unless you’ve been watching it ever since it started, you’re gonna have a pretty hard time catching up with all 900 episodes of One Piece for example!

Types of anime: Shoujo

types of anime

The next type of anime is called “Shoujo/Shôjo” which is kind of the opposite of Shounen. This is an anime genre that’s directed towards teen girls with themes like romance and drama.

Shoujo anime are usually a lot more relaxing and slower pace than the Shounen anime, and they also end up being a lot shorter.

The chances of a Shoujo anime lasting for hundreds of episodes is pretty small, and I think it’s better. I remember an anime show called Kimi ni Todoke to be one of the first Shôjo anime I ever watched and the guy was super popular and “Bishounen”. 😁

Some popular Shoujo anime are Fruits Basket, Skip Beat, Ouran Koukou Host Club, Kaichou wa Maid-sama, etc.

Types of anime: Smart Anime

Types of anime : Smart Anime

The next type of anime is called the smart anime and that’s not an official title but that’s what I’m gonna call it. This is the type of anime that makes you have to really think.

It goes into lots of plot twists and mental thoughts to the point where every episode feels like another move in a chess match.

Code Geass and Death Note really stand out when it comes to this anime genre, but even anime like Attack on Titan or The Promised Neverland can be considered a smart anime with how much strategy is discussed.

Types of anime: Harem

types of anime

The next types of anime are the harem and the reverse harem anime. These anime are usually about some guy/girl who is very popular with a group of four or more girls/guys for no good reason at all!

In fact, his/her personality is often boring and sometimes he/she is overpowered/week.

The reason that this anime type exist though is so that the guy/girl who’s watching can feel like the main character, and then he/she and his/her friends can all discuss which girl/guy is the best and fight to the death over her/him! 😝

Some popular Harem anime: Yamada-kun to 7-nin no Majo (TV), Nisekoi, Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai, and School Days (Please don’t watch this last one, it’s crap 😱😱😱).

Some popular reverse harem anime: Akatsuki no Yona, Ouran Koukou Host Club, Saiunkoku Monogatari, etc.

Personally, I think that Reverse Harem anime are way better than Harem.

Types of anime: Isekai

Types of anime

Another types of anime are called “Isekai anime”. it’s what happens when you randomly get hit by a truck and reincarnate into some other world where things like magic and fairies exist!

It’s a genre that’s often combined with the harem but not always you don’t have to die to be transported to another world. Though, sometimes it’s just a magic spell or maybe even a dream.

Most popular Isekai anime: Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu, Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari, Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken, etc.

Types of anime: Baby anime

types of anime

Next types of anime are called the “Baby anime”. Now, I’m not trying to be mean to the fans of these types of anime, but I’m gonna call it the baby anime just for fun!

Anime like Pokemon, Digimon, Beyblade and Doraemon would all be considered baby anime or anime directed towards kids under 12 years old.

This anime genre can be funny and entertaining but unless you’re under a certain age.

Types of anime: Slice of Life

types of anime slice of life

The next type of anime is called “slice of life” and this is a very special genre. It’s not about something crazy like saving the world or fighting the evil demon king, but rather something as simple as living in a farm or playing board games with friends.

It’s funny because even though the plot seems so simple it’s usually pretty entertaining and relaxing. It’s the kind of thing that someone who worked all day can sit down and watch while slowly regaining his energy.

Most popular Slice of life anime: 3-gatsu no Lion, Mushishi, Barakamon, Natsume Yuujinchou, etc.

Types of anime: Magical Girl

types of anime

The next type of anime is the “Magical Girl Anime”. The magical girl genre is pretty much like Sailor Moon and Card Captor Sakura.

It’s exactly what the title says, anime about magical girls female superheroes who are trying to save the world, usually with a group of other magical girls and they do some cool transformations.

Types of anime: Studio Ghibli anime

types of anime

Last but not least types of anime are the “Studio Ghibli anime”. Ghibli is an amazing anime studio with the main creator being Hayao Miyazaki.

Spirited away, Howl’s Moving Castle, Ponyo, My Neighbor Totoro are some examples of Studio Ghibli great works.

There’s a certain touch that Ghibli movies have and these movies are probably the easiest way to start getting someone into anime. It’s basically the Japanese Disney.

These are the 9 types of anime but of course, there are more than just 9. These are the most iconic or memorable ones in my opinion, though. Let me know what your favorite type of anime is!
