Kara no Kyoukai 5: Mujun Rasen Synopsis

In November 1998, a double murder took place at the recently built Ogawa Complex in Mifune City. The assassin, Tomoe Enjou, panic-stricken, has escaped.

To his surprise, Tomoe Enjou is not chased by the law enforcement, and news of the homicide has not been reported via media news.

After Shiki Ryougi protected Tomoe Enjou from a group of gangsters, she allowed him to stay in her habitation. A few days later, Tomoe Enjou discovered that his mum is still alive, even though he is sure that he murdered her.

At the same time and by change, Mikiya Kokutou was investigating an affair that his boss Touko Aozaki received regarding the homicide. As he unmasked more details about the murder, Mikiya took a special interest in Tomoe.

Let’s start our Garden of Sinners Movie 5 Review!

Kara no Kyoukai 5: Mujun Rasen Review

Kara no Kyoukai 5: Mujun Rasen Review

First of all, Kara no Kyoukai episode 5 is the first Garden of Sinners movie that benefits from a “sufficient” duration with always this aspect of “too fast” in the previous movies.

It is to be known that this will bring some good to Kara no Kyoukai anime series. The Kara no Kyoukai Movie 2 was the longest before and had the honor to introduce us the characters and to develop their psychology.

Well, here it’s done. But there is much more because everything is perfectly oiled with a remarkable direction and great ideas, the film becomes excellent.

The Garden of sinners Chapter 5: Paradox Spiral… It’s true that a title like that already tends to a sweet madness when you see bottomless stairs as illustration in the DVD.

Kara no Kyoukai 5: Mujun Rasen Story

As for the story, the pitch is that a boy, Enjou Tomoe, who looks strangely like Emiya from Fate/Zero, kills his parents and then runs away from home, but the problem is that his parents are not dead. He sees them doing their routine as if nothing had happened.

But every night, Enjou Tomoe has the same dream where he commits a parricide. And here he meets Shiki Ryougi who agrees to refuge him in as long as he doesn’t bother her.

After the first seconds, a bit disturbing, where we see the guy opening his mother’s belly and taking out her guts, we have the right to a bloody eye puncture and then to a head crushing against a wall.

This Kara no Kyoukai 5 is the most violent of all and not only for the blood.

It is already clear that the scenario of this film outclasses the previous movies. There are many twists and turns and a lot of thinking required to understand.

It’s impossible, and I mean IMPOSSIBLE, to understand the whole film during the first watching.

Even after watching it again and again you realize that you have missed some details, some winks. Then there is also the scenario itself.

We have the impression of following a normal storyline until some already seen scenes come back under a different point of view.

We then understand the mechanism of which the key and the opening of the doors are the metaphors. The scenes are thus put in the disorder, we don’t understand everything and we even have difficulty to put all in place in our head.

For that, you have to wait until the end to get a general idea of the meaning of the film. But what is interesting to see is that we move away from Suzumiya Haruhi which hid a weak scenario in this kind of episodic whirlwind.

Here the viewer is not taken for a fool, on the contrary, he will even have to think once the film is over.

It should be noted that we learn a lot about the mages, their goals and their past, which is just as interesting in the Type-Moon universe, of which the series is a part, as in the universe of Kara no Kyoukai anime series.

Kara no Kyoukai 5: Mujun Rasen Characters

Kara no Kyoukai 5: Mujun Rasen Characters

This Kara no Kyoukai Movie 5 allows you to learn much more about Aozaki Touko, an emblematic character of the series.

Ignoring Kokutou‘s jokes, surprised that Touka was also young, she spares us this time the pseudo-psychological blabber we were used to, which makes these moments noticeable and much less boring than before because we have a real story.

Kara no Kyoukai episode 5 finally offers us a charismatic antagonist, burying Asagami Fujino from the Garden of Sinners Movie 3: Souren Araya.

This villain is one of the main strengths of the scenario. His goal is not to kill for no reason, but to find a solution to the problem he is facing since a long time.

We can easily understand the suffering of the character and why he does this, which is quite rare.

We are far from the mentally ill who want to kill the good guy, he hates Touko without equal, and wants to kill her in one way or another.

His magician’s clothes, his voice, his chara-design and his actions really make him a madman. Unfortunately, he won’t have a moment of glory, but his presence will be enough to make some people sick.

On the other hand, we have Enjou Tomoe, Shiki’s substitute for a while. The story mainly revolves around him.

Indeed, his presence, although indispensable, just allows Shiki to place 2 or 3 well-felt sentences, but otherwise, he is still quite transparent. It’s a pity because he surely had good things to say or to do.

Mikiya Kokutou, as for him, is the character we will see or hear the least, not much to say about him except that his relationship with Shiki deepens little by little.

Kara no Kyoukai 5: Mujun Rasen Animation

A lot of things change in this Kara no Kyoukai 5 and especially the colors used. While we are used to see blue and green, here we see mostly warm and almost shimmering colors.

We often see the daylight and the whole is much less dark than the previous episodes, which I finally find paradoxical. Yes, they pushed the envelope so far for a metaphor.

It must be said that the graphic and aesthetic aspect of this film outclasses the previous Kara no Kyoukai movies by its, sometimes, daring side like the entrails in the building.

It is then necessary to speak about the chara-design always so mature. The new characters don’t deviate from the Type-Moon rule except “Emiya” who is finally really smooth in front of Araya who is marked by the deep wrinkles due to his old age.

Well-highlighted by the intelligent direction, the settings are often very detailed and offer many secrets that will be revealed only with the son of rewatching the Kara no Kyoukai 5.

Let’s talk about the direction that I find breathtaking. Already the scenes fit into each other with agility and the camera shots manage to show the maximum and the minimum to explain the story.

So, we often have shots showing the fixed characters, but there is no redundancy or boredom. The whole thing passes like a letter, showing and re-showing moments to make us understand the chronology of the story and the perfect cohesion.

Kara no Kyoukai 5: Mujun Rasen Music & OST

Very appreciable out of context, the Kara no Kyoukai 5 music is a pearl of atmosphere like its elders. The background themes and the battle themes are so well done, especially the theme used in a fights: Shiki Vs Araya and Touko Vs Araya.

The Ending Theme used for this movie is “Sprinter” by Kalafina. Once again, Kalafina has done it. Her song fits perfectly in a dim and psychological movie.

So what to retain from this Kara no Kyoukai movie? Its fascinating story? Its beneficial long format? Its breathtaking direction?

In short, I won’t go into details, you already understand it: Kara no Kyoukai 5: Mujun Rasen (the Garden of sinners Chapter 5: Paradox Paradigm – Kara no Kyoukai: The Garden of Sinners Movie 5 – Borderline of Emptiness: Paradox Spiral – The Garden of Sinners: Paradox Paradigm) is a must-see which deserves a place in the pantheon of great mystery thriller anime movies.
